Mitigation
The Morfa Friog realignment was carried out as part of the Fairbourne Flood defence scheme.
Intertidal saltmarsh was created as mitigation for the loss of coastal habitats in the future as a result of the flood defence works.
Its implementation was a condition of developing the scheme.
A small breach was excavated in the flood embankment that bordered the site in 2015.
Prior to the embankment breach, the site was predominantly mesotrophic grassland. This was replaced by pioneer saltmarsh vegetation following the change to tidal conditions.
