The Hedwige-Prosperpolder site (also known as the Hertogin-Hedwigepolder) lies in the southwest of the Netherlands on the Schedlt Estuary. It is situated on the Dutch-Belgium border. The Hedwigepolder is on Dutch side, the Prosperpolder on the Belgian side.
This site was historically claimed from the sea. However, in 2005 a decision was taken to 'depolder' the sites. This was proposed to help restore natural habitats and improve the ecological quality of the Western Scheldt. This decision was controversial and the resulting public/political concerns delayed its implementation.
