The Calstock Managed Realignment was implemented by the Environment Agency (England). At this site the embankment was in a poor condition and at risk of collapse. To create more sustainable defences as well as intertidal habitat, the Environment Agency constructed a 600 m length of new embankment at the back of the site before opening a beach in the old defences in November 2021.
The new embankments were built using local material dug from the creeks and pools in the inter-tidal area. These embankment and the 12 ha of intertidal habitats created now provide protection to Calstock Village
The projects was carried out to achieve a range of benefits. It was designed to improve standard of tidal protection, reduce maintenance costs of defences, deliver WFD mitigation measures, adapt to coastal squeeze, contribute to habitat creation targets, improve water quality and provide an area of value for recreational health and wellbeing.
To allow access around the site, a raised walkway/bridge feature was constructed over the single embankment breach.
